Overview

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) supports the Nurse Manager in overseeing daily Health Center operations at Camp Loyaltown. This role combines leadership and direct oversight of clinical responsibilities, assisting with the supervision, training, and coordination of nursing staff while maintaining compliance with ACA, DOH, and agency standards.

 

The ANM plays a key role in ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of the Health Center by providing hands-on clinical support, maintaining medical documentation, monitoring medication administration, and ensuring camper and staff health needs are met in a safe and timely manner.

The Assistant Nurse Manager serves as the on-site lead in the Nurse Manager’s absence and collaborates closely with camp leadership, nursing teams, and other departments to uphold the highest standards of health, safety, and care for campers and staff.

 

The ANM must be immediately available on-call 24/7 during camp sessions (within 30 minutes) during the scheduled on-premises overnight stays (Thursday, Friday, & Saturday) or in the absence of the NM.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Staffing

  • Support the Nurse Manager in supervising Health Center operations and nursing staff.
  • Assist with hiring, orientation, training, scheduling, and evaluation of nursing and Health Care Assistant staff.
  • Provide mentorship, daily supervision, and act as Health Center lead when the Nurse Manager is unavailable.
  • Oversee shift transitions and manage nurse schedules to ensure adequate coverage.

Operations & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with DOH, ACA, and agency policies related to medical care, documentation, and infection control.
  • Maintain supply inventories, equipment checks, and secure storage of medications and medical records.
  • Participate in audits, reporting, and seasonal planning to ensure continuity of operations and staff readiness.
  • Collaborate with the Nurse Manager during the off‑season to plan and prepare for the upcoming camp season, including camper enrollment reviews, orientation schedules, staff training, equipment checks, and vendor coordination.

Clinical Oversight

  • Provide direct nursing coverage, including medication administration, treatments, and emergency response when needed.
  • Monitor safe medication practices and support implementation of emergency protocols, disease prevention, and injury management.
  • Communicate medical concerns promptly to families, supervisors, and leadership.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with camp leadership and other departments to integrate medical support into daily camp life.
  • Attend leadership meetings, conduct nursing huddles, and facilitate effective communication with families and providers.

Technology & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate and confidential medical records in compliance with standards.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office and electronic health systems for scheduling, documentation, and compliance reporting.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Current NYS Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Current CPR/AED certification, or ability to obtain within 60 DAYS of hire; must be renewed annually in accordance with DOH regulations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Candidates not yet proficient in Excel will receive training and must achieve proficiency within three months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of nursing experience, preferably in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Experience working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Ability to remain on campgrounds for extended periods during the camp season, including overnight stays when required for on-site RN coverage.
  • Ability to move throughout camp property, including uneven terrain and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or move up to 25 pounds independently and assist with lifting/transferring campers as needed.
  • Capacity to respond quickly in emergency situations, which may require physical activity (e.g., CPR, first aid).
  • Tolerance for extended standing, walking, or bending during daily operations.
  • Must be immediately available “on call” 24/7 during camp sessions unless alternate coverage is arranged (response time within 30 minutes).
  • Location:
    • Camp Season (May 1 – September): Based in Hunter, NY, five days per week.
      • Exact end date subject to camp schedule.
      • Work Schedule: Friday, Saturday, Sunday (Off), Monday (Off), Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Work schedule to change based on the program needs
      • Required to be on-site overnight on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
    • Camp Season Off-Season (September – April 30):
      • Requirement to be on-site in Hunter at least three days per week, as per the needs of the program schedule by the Nurse Manager. Private accommodations are provided when on-site in Hunter. The other two days per week can be worked remote or at our Plainview location.
